Mystic - Katherine "Kay" Pere passed away peacefully Oct. 1, 2026. at Westerly Hospital.
Born in Whittier, Calif., Kay grew up in La Habra Heights, attended school in Southern California, and earned a degree in vocal music education, with further credits toward an electrical engineering degree. In 1993, Kay came to Connecticut and three years later, met her husband Bill Pere at a meeting of the Connecticut Songwriters Association. They were married in Mystic July 31, 1999. Over a span of 30 years, The two went on to forge a national legacy of philanthropy through the arts. Kay was known across the U.S. and beyond as a pillar of the singer-songwriter community, with workshops and master classes in vocal technique and creative process given coast-to-coast over three decades. In addition to her angelic soprano voice and immaculately crafted songs, she also enjoyed wide-ranging recognition as a ceramic artist, native plant enthusiast, block-printer, and many other art forms. Her philanthropy and pursuit of social justice through music was an inspiration to many. She recorded in Nashville, performed at many prestigious venues, had her songs recorded by other artists including the great Melba Moore, and won numerous awards. Kay directed two local church choirs, performed with the Connecticut Gilbert and Sullivan Society, performed at the legendary CBGB Club, and sang with a choir at Avery Fisher Hall in New York. With her husband Bill, Kay performed many concerts carrying on the philanthropic legacy of the late Harry Chapin, including five concerts with the original Chapin Band. Most of all, Kay was known for her unending kindness and gentle spirit that was the center of all she undertook. Her absence will be widely felt, but as long as her name is spoken, she will be with us still. She is survived by her husband and soulmate Bill Pere; her 101-year-old mother; two brothers; two cherished stepchildren; and a grandchild. Kay was predeceased by her father Arthur Klopfenstein; and her brother Mark. There i a Celebration of Life 10 a.m. Nov. 21, at Union Baptist Church in Mystic.
